A moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.3 on the Richter scale struck the Cachar district of Assam early Monday morning, causing brief panic among residents. According to the National Center for Seismology the quake occurred at 5:48 AM IST with its epicentre located at a depth of 10 kilometres. While the tremors were most intensely felt in Silchar and surrounding areas of the Barak Valley, residents in neighboring states like Manipur and Mizoram also reported feeling the vibrations.
Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage to property. Local authorities have conducted preliminary assessments and urged citizens to remain vigilant, as the region falls under seismic zone V, making it highly prone to tectonic activity. Emergency response teams remain on standby, though the early morning tremor served as a sharp reminder of the area’s geological vulnerability.
