Proposed Rail, Bus Resumption Sparks Debate Over India-Bangladesh Ties

Efforts to resume railway and bus services between India and Bangladesh have triggered mixed reactions, including opposition from sections of organisations aligned with the BJP. According to reports, railway authorities of the two countries are preparing to hold an Inter Governmental Railway Meeting (IGRM) in Dhaka to discuss the restoration of cross-border rail services. The two sides are reportedly considering the resumption of the Maitree, Bandhan and Mitali Express services, which were suspended following the change of government in Bangladesh in August 2024. Bus services may also resume as part of broader efforts to improve bilateral connectivity and relations. However, sections of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have expressed reservations about any move towards normalisation, citing concerns over the reported condition and safety of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. A senior VHP leader, speaking anonymously, argued that India should prioritise the protection and wellbeing of Hindus in Bangladesh while remaining cautious about deeper engagement. The leader also raised concerns over illegal migration and its possible demographic impact on India. The debate comes as both countries face strategic and economic considerations surrounding their bilateral relationship, with connectivity, trade and regional geopolitics likely to remain important factors in determining the future course of India-Bangladesh ties.
