The Gauhati High Court has intervened in a long-standing cultural debate by ordering the Assam government to immediately stop buffalo fights, a traditional practice often held during the Magh Bihu festivities. The court’s decision follows a series of petitions filed by animal welfare organizations highlighting the cruelty and physical distress caused to the animals during these events. The ruling emphasizes that such practices, while rooted in tradition, cannot override the legal protections afforded to animals under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
The directive comes as a significant blow to organizers in areas like Morigaon and Nagaon, where buffalo fighting draws large crowds and is considered an integral part of the seasonal celebrations. While proponents of the tradition argue that it is a symbolic display of strength and heritage, the court has maintained that the safety and well-being of the animals must take precedence. The state government is now tasked with ensuring that local administrations strictly enforce the ban, marking a pivotal shift in how traditional sports are managed in the region.
