Assam Flood Outlook Remains Grim as Over 46,000 Reeling and 3,800 Hectares of Cropland Submerged

The flood situation in Assam remains deeply critical following relentless monsoon downpours across the state and its upper catchment areas in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh. According to the latest bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the escalating deluge has severely impacted 46,938 people across 221 villages and 10 revenue circles. The state tragically recorded its first flood-related casualty of the season after a woman drowned in floodwaters at Sissiborgaon in the Dhemaji district. Dhemaji continues to bear the absolute brunt of the natural disaster, accounting for a staggering 45,841 of the total affected population, while five other districts—Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur, and Biswanath—are also battling severe inundation.

The surge has dealt a catastrophic blow to the rural economy, submerging over 3,809 hectares of vital agricultural cropland and directly threatening the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. Major river systems, including the Brahmaputra and the Disang, have breached their danger thresholds at multiple monitoring stations, triggering severe embankment erosion and widespread infrastructure damage. The powerful currents have already caused a portion of a critical railway bridge over the Simen River to collapse in Dhemaji, disrupting local connectivity. In response to the unfolding crisis, Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Shivraj Singh Chouhan conducted an aerial survey of the worst-hit zones to evaluate damage, while state authorities have deployed four emergency relief camps and six distribution centers to assist displaced residents and protect the 88,000 domestic animals impacted by the rising waters.
