Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama met India’s Ambassador to Norway Gloria Gangte at the Indian Embassy in Oslo, where they discussed issues concerning India’s diverse ethnic communities, particularly those in the northeastern region. The meeting took place during Lalbiakzama’s official tour following his participation in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. The tour was organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and also included visits to France and Switzerland, where Indian diplomatic missions hosted the delegation. According to an official statement, the Oslo meeting provided an opportunity for discussions on national integration and the diverse ethnic groups living across India. Particular attention was given to communities in the Northeast, a region known for its ethnic and cultural diversity. Gangte hosted Lalbiakzama and his wife for dinner during their visit to Norway, providing an informal setting for the exchange of views on issues relating to the region and the country as a whole. Lalbiakzama was accompanied by Lalthangmawia, Additional Secretary of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Secretariat, during the meeting. The interaction between the Mizoram Assembly Speaker and India’s ambassador in Norway formed part of the delegation’s wider official engagements during its international tour. The visit followed the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, which brought together parliamentary representatives and provided an international platform for discussions related to parliamentary affairs and public institutions. The subsequent programme in Europe included engagements hosted by Indian diplomatic missions in France, Switzerland and Norway. The meeting in Oslo also highlighted the role of Indian diplomatic missions in facilitating discussions involving representatives from states and regions of the country during official overseas visits. For Mizoram, the engagement provided an opportunity to highlight matters concerning the state and the wider northeastern region in an international setting. The Northeast comprises communities with distinct languages, cultures, traditions and identities, making questions of national integration and inclusive engagement significant subjects of discussion. The officials’ exchange in Oslo focused on these broader themes rather than any specific policy announcement. Lalbiakzama’s visit to Norway was part of a larger itinerary that combined parliamentary participation with diplomatic engagements in several European countries. The programme in Norway included the meeting with Ambassador Gangte and the dinner hosted for the Speaker and his wife. The presence of the Assembly Secretariat’s Additional Secretary Lalthangmawia added a legislative and administrative dimension to the delegation’s engagement. Through meetings with Indian diplomatic representatives, the delegation had opportunities to discuss issues connected with India’s regions and communities while representing Mizoram abroad. The Oslo interaction served as an occasion to exchange perspectives on national integration, ethnic diversity and the concerns of northeastern communities. The meeting also underscored the importance of dialogue and engagement in understanding India’s varied social landscape. During the wider tour, these engagements complemented the Speaker’s parliamentary participation and provided opportunities for interaction with Indian diplomatic representatives.
