Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the multi-billion-rupee Tata semiconductor facility in Jagiroad is set to begin operations very soon. Following a high-level site visit to evaluate the plant’s development, the Chief Minister confirmed that the joint efforts of the project team and the state government have yielded rapid progress. Built with an estimated investment of ₹27,000 crore, the facility is designated as the country’s first indigenous and greenfield Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) plant. Once fully commissioned, the mega-facility will hold an extraordinary manufacturing capacity, producing up to 48 million semiconductor chips per day to supply critical global markets.
This landmark project marks a massive structural shift for Northeast India, firmly embedding the region into the global technology supply chain and supporting the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance). The high-tech chips rolled out from the facility will cater directly to critical, advanced sectors including automotive manufacturing, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and artificial intelligence (AI) driven devices. Beyond its heavy technological impact, the facility is projected to transform the regional economy by creating over 27,000 direct and indirect high-skilled employment opportunities, fostering a vibrant local ecosystem of ancillary industries and STEM talent in the state.
