Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea entered the French Open quarterfinals on Sunday after defeating China’s Wang Xiyu 6-3, 7-6(4). Cîrstea was expected to face a tough challenge from Wang Xiyu. But the Romanian’s experience proved decisive. She maintained control for a large part of the match, and even when Wang mounted a strong challenge, she did not lose her composure.
Cîrstea dominated from the start. Using depth of shot and high-quality court positioning, the 36-year-old broke serve twice in the first set to take a decisive 5-1 lead. Wang, who only resumed her season in March after a long shoulder injury, eventually found her form, reclaiming a service break to narrow the deficit.
Cîrstea quickly regrouped to take the opening set 6-3, ensuring Wang’s comeback never fully gained momentum. The second set proved far more intense. Cîrstea secured two service breaks and was heading toward an easy win. When Wang was on the verge of exiting, she produced some of her best tennis. Winning consecutive games to level at 5-5, she suddenly put pressure on the Romanian. Just when the match seemed to be heading for a deciding set, Cîrstea relied on her experience.
