Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has released a comprehensive “people’s charge sheet” against the BJP-led government in Assam, accusing it of institutionalizing systemic corruption and a “syndicate raj.” The 20-page document alleges that the current administration has favored corporate houses by handing over indigenous lands and has allowed the state to become a hub for illegal activities, including contraband smuggling and unauthorized coal mining. Furthermore, the Congress party claims that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his associates have accumulated illegal wealth through an organized syndicate system, diverting public funds intended for infrastructure and basic amenities into real estate and shell companies.
Beyond financial misconduct, the charge sheet highlights severe governance failures and the betrayal of regional identity. It criticizes the government for Assam’s skyrocketing debt, which has reportedly crossed ₹2 lakh crore, and accuses the BJP of sabotaging the 1985 Assam Accord by implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The document further notes the closure of over 9,000 state-run schools and the government’s failure to resolve perennial issues like floods or grant Scheduled Tribe status to six long-demanding communities. By releasing this document, the Congress aims to frame the upcoming elections as a battle against “irresponsible governance” and the erosion of Assamese interests.
