Mizoram Highlights Landslide Risks, Seeks UNDRR Cooperation for Climate Resilience

The Mizoram government has sought stronger collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) to enhance disaster resilience and climate adaptation measures in the state. The request was made by Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma during a meeting with Kumar Kishore, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, in New Delhi.

During the meeting, the minister highlighted Mizoram’s increasing vulnerability to natural hazards, including landslides, rockfalls, earthquakes, environmental degradation and climate-related disasters. He stressed the need for technical cooperation, global knowledge sharing and innovative approaches to strengthen disaster preparedness and risk reduction.

Lalnilawma also outlined the state government’s initiatives to promote risk-informed urban planning and improve safety standards through mandatory geotechnical investigations for construction activities. He further mentioned the development of Thenzawl in Serchhip district as a “Peace City” aimed at reducing developmental pressure on Aizawl and supporting balanced urban growth.

The Mizoram government expressed hope that expanded cooperation with UNDRR would help the state adopt global best practices, improve disaster management systems and build a more resilient future amid growing climate challenges. The collaboration is expected to support sustainable development and strengthen the state’s ability to respond effectively to emerging environmental risks.
