Papon Missing Assam, but Not the Spirit of Bihu

Despite being away from his home state during the peak of the Spring festivities, popular singer Papon shared that the essence of Rongali Bihu remains a constant part of his life. In a recent interaction, the artist expressed a sense of nostalgia for the celebrations in Assam the scent of the blooming Kopou Phool, the community feasts, and the vibrant atmosphere of his hometown. However, he emphasised that for an artist, the “spirit of Bihu” is a portable heritage that he carries through his music and his interactions with the global Assamese diaspora.

Papon highlighted that even when professional commitments keep him in Mumbai or traveling for concerts, he makes it a point to celebrate the day with traditional food and by connecting with fellow Assamese artists. He noted that the resilience of the festival lies in its ability to bring people together regardless of geography. For him, the rhythmic energy of the dhol and the folk melodies he incorporates into his performances are a way of staying anchored to his roots, ensuring that while he may miss the physical presence of the celebrations in Assam, the cultural fire of Bihu remains undiminished.
