Nagaland Takes Major Step Towards Private Solar Power Generation

The Nagaland government has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tvaksas Renewable Pvt Ltd to develop a 20 MW solar power project at Lapa Lampong village in Tizit, Mon district. Signed on August 20 in Kohima, the agreement marks Nagaland’s first private solar Independent Power Producer initiative and is expected to strengthen the state’s renewable energy capacity while reducing its dependence on power purchased from outside. The Phase-I project is scheduled to be commissioned within 20 months and will supply electricity to the state grid at a fixed tariff of ₹4.12 per unit. The plant is expected to generate around 35 million units of electricity annually for 25 years and prevent nearly 25,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Officials said the project would also create employment opportunities for local youth during construction and operation. With Nagaland’s peak power demand currently at 203 MW and projected to reach 482 MW by 2034-35, the state is encouraging greater private-sector participation in power generation. Tvaksas Renewable plans to expand its solar programme in Nagaland to 100 MW in phases.
