Biocon’s Next Chapter: Sreya Mazumdar Set to Lead as Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Steps Back

Sreya Mazumdar, the niece of biotechnology pioneer Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, is set to take over the leadership of the institution. Sreya will assume the responsibilities of the organization that her aunt has built over the years. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who has led the company for more than four decades on the world stage, has now decided to bring Sreya forward to lead the institution into its next phase.
In a recent interview, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw stated, “The time has come to hand over the organization to Sreya Mazumdar and the younger generation. I must ensure that everything I have built is taken forward by Sreya. I am confident that everyone will see her talent and potential in the coming days.” Sreya Mazumdar is the 37-year-old niece of Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. She holds a degree in Biology and Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a PhD from Stanford University.
Before joining Biocon, she worked with several prestigious global institutions and companies in the field of medicine and technology.
Founded by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon has grown into a massive enterprise. In 2024, the company’s market valuation was estimated to be over $1.6 billion. The transition marks a significant moment for the organization as it looks toward a future guided by new leadership while maintaining its established legacy in the global biotech market.
