The hints were already there. This time, Cricket Australia has given a final shape to those indications. The opening match of the 2026–27 Big Bash League season will be held in India. Chennai’s Chidambaram Stadium has been selected for this special match. In February of the current year, Cricket Australia had expressed interest in hosting the opening match of the Big Bash in India.
Accordingly, representatives from Cricket Australia visited the Chidambaram Stadium several times and held meetings with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. To give a final shape to this plan, a five-member delegation from Cricket Australia enjoyed an IPL match held between CSK and Sunrisers on Monday. BCCI President Mithun Manhas was also present.
Following the green signal from the Indian Board, an agreement will soon be signed between the boards of the two countries. However, organizing the match will also create a few challenges. Specifically, there are no direct flights to Chennai from any Australian city. This aspect will have to be kept in mind while scheduling the league fixtures.
Additionally, Big Bash matches are held at 2 PM Indian Standard Time. There might be a shortage of spectators in Chennai at that time. Once these problems are resolved, Cricket Australia will formally announce the date of the match.
