Bhutan’s Queen Mother Honoured with ‘Soldier of Humanity’ Award in Assam

In a prestigious ceremony held at Bodoland University in Kokrajhar, Assam, the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Gyalyum Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, was conferred with the 22nd Upendra Nath Brahma ‘Soldier of Humanity’ Award for 2025. Presented by the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT), the accolade recognizes her lifelong dedication to humanitarian service, social development, and inclusive growth. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who served as the chief guest, hailed the Queen Mother as a global leader in social welfare, emphasizing that her tireless efforts in championing human dignity and compassion make her a fitting recipient of the honor named after the revered Bodo leader, Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma.

The Queen Mother’s extensive impact on rural development and poverty alleviation was highlighted through her work as the founder-president of the Tarayana Foundation. Her initiatives have brought essential healthcare, education, and women’s empowerment to some of Bhutan’s most remote regions while simultaneously preserving the nation’s rich cultural heritage. The award, which includes a citation, a cash prize of ₹2 lakh, and traditional Bodo cultural artifacts, was presented in the presence of high-ranking officials from both India and Bhutan. The event served not only to celebrate her achievements but also to strengthen the cultural and diplomatic bonds between the two neighboring regions through a shared commitment to social justice and moral values.
