At Inaugural North East Education Conclave, Leaders Call for Flexible NEP Implementation

Lawmakers and education ministers from across the North East gathered at the inaugural North East Education Conclave on NEP 2020 at Chümoukedima, Nagaland, to highlight critical implementation gaps and advocate for education policies tailored to the region’s unique geographic, social, and economic realities. Addressing the theme “Implementation of NEP 2020: Vision, Challenges & Opportunities for the North Eastern states,” leaders underscored that uniform national metrics fail to address specific regional constraints such as difficult terrain, sparse populations, funding deficits, and digital divides. Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along emphasized shifting focus from traditional degrees to skill-based employability and proposed exploring Christian studies within academic discourses. Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu pointed out that competitive examinations like JEE and NEET serve only about 3% of students, leaving nearly 97% in general education who urgently require job-oriented training, soft skills, and practical vocational certifications. Mizoram Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana highlighted structural issues including a high number of low-enrolment schools, inadequate higher secondary coverage in rural areas, and a misallocation of teachers at foundational stages, urging for terrain-based access norms and a jointly governed North Eastern multidisciplinary university. Additionally, Tripura Minister Kishor Barman stressed balancing local cultural roots with global skills like artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship, while Arunachal Pradesh MLA Mutchu Mithi drew attention to severe financial shortfalls and the pressing need for digital literacy to combat online misinformation. Concluding the session—which featured remarks by Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik and state presentations—the region’s representatives collectively urged central authorities to adapt NEP 2020 mechanisms into flexible, practical solutions that translate into meaningful learning, skill enhancement, and sustainable employment for the youth of the North East.
