Aston Villa End 30-Year Trophy Drought With 3-0 Europa League Final Rout of Freiburg; Emery Lifts Record Fifth Title

After a long 30-year wait, English Premier League club Aston Villa tasted ultimate glory. Last night, in the final of European football’s second-tier competition, the Europa League, they defeated German club Freiburg by a 3-0 margin to lift the title for the second time.
In the one-sided final held in Istanbul, Tielemans gave Villa the lead in the 41st minute with a thunderous strike. During the first-half injury time, Buendía doubled the lead with an unbelievable curve shot. After the halftime break, Freiburg’s defeat was sealed by a buzzer-beater goal in the 58th minute. This is Villa’s first major title since winning the English League Cup in 1996.
Unai Emery’s side touched a European trophy after 44 long years. In the club’s 152-year history, the most memorable victory until now was the 1982 European Cup title. In that historic final match, Villa had defeated Bayern Munich. A member of that title-winning squad… (sentence cut off at the bottom).

…sat in the gallery last night and enjoyed Villa’s victory. Instead of their traditional claret-and-blue jersey, Villa wore a white jersey last night. They had also worn a white jersey against Bayern Munich in 1982.
With this, coach Unai Emery has won the Europa League title for the fifth time. Prior to this, he won it three consecutive times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal. The current season will remain unforgettable for Villa. Last week, Villa secured their place in the Champions League by defeating Liverpool.
Goalkeeper Martínez also shares immense credit for this final match. He kept his record intact of never being defeated in any career final. Out of seven finals played so far, Martínez has not been defeated in even one.
