Assam Students Learn Water Quality Testing to Tackle Local and Global Environmental Crises

In response to growing pollution concerns, a biodiversity conservation organization called Aaranyak has launched a hands-on educational initiative to teach schoolchildren in Assam how to test water quality. Partnering with the Assam Pollution Control Board, Samagra Shiksha Assam, and Wipro Earthian, the program aims to translate classroom science lessons into real-world environmental action. Students, starting at Krishnanagar Vidyapeeth High School, are trained to analyze various crucial water parameters including pH, total dissolved solids, hardness, alkalinity, and the presence of harmful substances like iron, arsenic, and fluoride.

Beyond learning simple scientific testing methods, the initiative engages students in practical community outreach through mini case studies. Students are tasked with documenting neighborhood water usage patterns and assessing public attitudes toward local water pollution and conservation. Coordinators of the program highlighted how this experiential learning bridges theoretical knowledge with tangible local issues, particularly in areas like Guwahati, where communities simultaneously grapple with drinking water scarcity and recurring urban floods. Organized against the backdrop of a global water resource crisis, the initiative aims to equip the younger generation with vital life skills to navigate a changing environment.
