A second wave of floods hits Assam, impacting 50,000 residents

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that Assam has seen its second wave of floods this year, affecting about 50,000 people in five districts as a result of intense rains. The districts of Golaghat, Cachar, Sonitpur, Nagaon, and Bishwanath have all been submerged; however, Golaghat has been hit the hardest, with 32,217 people writhing under the floodwaters. 13,409 people have been reported impacted in Sonitpur, and neighboring districts have also been seriously impacted. A number of rivers, such as the Dikhou in Sivasagar, the Dhansiri in Golaghat, the Barak in Cachar, and the Kushiara in Sribhumi, are flowing over the danger mark.

8,131 individuals are being housed in 29 relief camps that authorities have established around the impacted districts. Furthermore, 19,162 relief distribution centers are functioning to deliver assistance. Although there have been no recorded fatalities in this wave, the state has already seen 32 fatalities from flooding this year. Over 14,861 animals have been impacted by the flood, and 4,632 hectares of crops are under water. The most recent flood scenario has highlighted Assam’s ongoing susceptibility to seasonal floods, upsetting crops, livelihoods, and lives throughout large areas of the state.
