Assam Flood Death Toll Rises To 101, Over 1.26 Lakh People Affected In 10 Districts

The death toll in the Assam floods has risen to 101. As the water recedes, bodies are being recovered one after another from various districts. With the recovery of one more body recently, the death toll in this devastating flood has now gone up to 101.

According to the latest flood report of 10th August, 1,26,431 people are still affected by floods in 10 districts of the state. The impact of the floods continues in Nagaon, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Darrang, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Cachar, Charaideo and Jorhat. Meanwhile, 458 villages under 25 revenue circles have been affected by the floods.

The number of affected people highlights the grim situation in Golaghat. 71,061 people have been affected in the district. 21,600 people have been affected in Sivasagar and 16,908 in Nagaon. 13,166 people are also affected in Jorhat. Meanwhile, 2,539 people are affected in Charaideo, 852 in Karbi Anglong and 305 in Darrang.

The floodwaters have not only impacted human lives but have also caused extensive damage to agriculture. 11,287.04 hectares of agricultural land in the flood-affected districts of the state are under water. Of this, 4,194.1 hectares of agricultural land have been submerged in Nagaon. 2,210 hectares in Sivasagar and 2,040.94 hectares in Golaghat have also been affected.

Meanwhile, caution continues over the water levels of rivers. According to data from the Central Water Commission, the water level of the Dhansiri South river at Golaghat and Numaligarh is still flowing above the danger level. Similarly, the water level of the Kushiyara river at Sribhumi has also crossed the danger mark. However, so far no river has crossed the highest flood level.

Amid the floods, 89 relief camps and relief distribution centres have been opened for the homeless. 8,447 flood-affected people are taking shelter in the camps. This includes 3,648 men, 3,593 women and 1,143 children.
