Nagaland Takes Major Step Towards Organ Transplant Facility

Nagaland has taken a significant step towards strengthening its healthcare infrastructure with the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) initiating the process for registration and licensing to establish an organ transplant centre in the state.

The announcement was made by Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mereninla Senlem, during the Indian Organ Donation Day programme organised by MOHAN Foundation in collaboration with NHAK and the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Nagaland. The programme was held under the theme, “Stories of Hope, Gifts of Life: Promoting Organ Donation in Nagaland.”

Dr. Senlem said Nagaland is at a crucial stage in developing organ donation and transplant services. Although transplant facilities are currently unavailable in the state, efforts are underway to create the necessary infrastructure, enhance medical capacity and improve access to advanced healthcare.

She said the initiation of the registration and licensing process by NHAK marks an important milestone in the state’s healthcare journey and reflects the government’s commitment to providing better treatment options for patients.

Highlighting the importance of organ donation, Dr. Senlem said one donor can save multiple lives and transform the future of several families. She also stressed the need for greater public awareness and participation, stating that community support is essential for bridging the gap between organ demand and availability.

The programme also featured inspiring stories from organ donors and transplant recipients, along with a testimonial video highlighting the life-changing impact of organ donation.
