Community-Driven Progress: Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome Inaugurates New Government Primary School Building in Kohima

In a remarkable display of community-led development, the newly constructed building of the Government Primary School at Kewhitsütuo Model, Kohima, was officially inaugurated on Friday. Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor for School Education and SCERT, attended the event as the chief guest and highly commended the local community for taking the initiative to strengthen public education without waiting for government intervention.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Yhome highlighted that the school building, funded and built entirely by the Tsütuonuomia Khel (T. Khel) Council, reflects the people’s deep commitment to uplifting public education. Describing schools as “temples of education” that liberate society, he praised the foresight of the T. Khel elders for reserving land for educational infrastructure amid rapid urbanization. He drew a parallel between corporate models and local traditions, terming this initiative as a fine example of “Community Support Resources.” Dr. Yhome also shared that the School Education Department has begun documenting such community-driven efforts to inspire similar projects across Nagaland, hinting at a potential upgrade to a composite school in the future.

Delivering the keynote address, T. Khel Council Chairman, K. Neibou Sekhose, stated that the project fulfills a vision conceived in the late 1970s. He revealed expanding blueprints for the area, including plans for a higher secondary school and an international-standard sports stadium. The event also marked the flagging off of a new sanitation vehicle to serve over 800 residents. Additionally, Kohima Municipal Council Chairman, Neibodzelie Solo, urged the public to practice responsible waste management and actively participate in the upcoming Census 2027 exercise. The school currently caters to 67 students under the guidance of eight dedicated teachers.
