Kolkata’s Iconic Eden Gardens Set for Infrastructure Upgrade with New Populous Design

Global architecture firm Populous has unveiled a major redevelopment vision for Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens stadium, aiming to transform the historic cricket venue into a world-class multi-purpose sports and entertainment destination.

The proposed infrastructure upgrade will increase the stadium’s seating capacity from 68,000 to 85,000 while adding over 41,000 sq. ft. of hospitality infrastructure and 44,000 sq. ft. of non-match day facilities. The redevelopment also plans a 30 percent increase in corporate hospitality seating with six distinct seating categories to boost fan engagement and commercial opportunities.

The project will introduce premium features including a Sky Deck, Sky Lounge, IPL fan zones, corporate boxes, lounges and a Members’ Club, while preserving the heritage identity of the 1864-built stadium through a museum, hall of fame and digital engagement zones.

Populous Principal Siddharth Soni said the redevelopment would focus on safety, sustainability and fan experience while ensuring Eden Gardens remains future-ready. Cricket Association of Bengal president and former India captain Sourav Ganguly said the vision is to make Eden Gardens one of the finest cricket venues globally in terms of quality, comfort and experience.

Supported by Trade and Investment Queensland, the project highlights growing international collaboration in India’s sports infrastructure sector. Populous has previously designed landmark venues including the Narendra Modi Stadium, Lord’s Cricket Ground and Melbourne Cricket Ground.
