Assam Passport Row Delhi Police Search Pawan Khera’s Residence Following FIR by CM’s Wife

In a significant escalation of the ongoing “Passport Row,” the Delhi Police, acting on a request from the Assam Police, conducted a search operation at the residence of senior Congress leader Pawan Khera on Tuesday morning. The legal action stems from a First Information Report (FIR) filed by Riki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The complaint alleges that Khera made derogatory and misleading statements regarding the citizenship and passport status of the Chief Minister’s family members during a televised press conference, which the complainant asserts has caused significant “reputational damage and public disharmony. The search, which lasted several hours, reportedly focused on seizing electronic devices and documents related to the sources of the allegations. Following the operation, Pawan Khera addressed the media, labeling the police action as “political vendetta” and an attempt to silence the opposition’s questions regarding land deals and administrative transparency in Assam.

He stated that the Congress party would not be intimidated by “legal harassment” and would continue to raise issues pertinent to the public interest. The Assam BJP leadership has defended the move, stating that the law must take its course when “baseless lies” are spread to malign individuals. Meanwhile, the Congress legal cell is expected to move the court for a quashing of the FIR, even as the “Passport Row” becomes a central flashpoint in the national political discourse ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. As the probe intensifies, the incident has further polarized the relationship between the ruling party and the opposition, with both sides trading accusations of abusing the state machinery.
