The much-anticipated State Basketball League 2025 got started on Sunday in Paljor Stadium. The three-month competition was opened in the presence of Aditya Golay, MLA of Soreng-Chakung constituency, who served as the event’s principal guest. The inauguration event was attended by Gnathang-Machong, MLA Pamin Lepcha, SIMFED chairman Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, SKM students wing president Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, Tourism Secretary Hondala Gyaltsen, and other guests. The Basketball Association of Sikkim (BAS) organizes this year’s league, which includes 16 men’s and 6 women’s teams. The opening ceremony featured a women’s exhibition match between the Veterans and Young Stars. MLA Aditya Golay praised the event’s organizers during his speech. He wished all participating teams the best of luck and promised to continue supporting the organization during the tournament and sports in general in the region. Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, SIMFED chairman, remarked on his own experience as a school-level basketball athlete.
Gnathang-Machong MLA Pamin Lepcha, who returned to the court for the exhibition match after 22 years, expressed her delight at playing throughout the competition. She urged participants to “play fair, play safe, and play with true spirit.”
Meanwhile, Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting sports and empowering young people throughout the state.
