The Kanchenjunga base camp region in Taplejung has emptied out as the main trekking season officially comes to a close. Areas that usually bustle with trekkers Khambachen, Lhonak and Pangpema in the northern base camp, along with Cheram and Ramjer in the southern route are now devoid of visitors.
Tourism entrepreneurs say the flow of tourists stopped soon after the season ended, leaving the Himalayan trails silent. Lodge operators who had been running their businesses in high-altitude settlements have returned to lower villages, as winter sets in across the mountain region.
Despite the seasonal lull, records indicate a steady rise in interest. According to the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council, 950 foreign trekkers visited the region during the first trekking window this year, with sporadic visitors still arriving even after November. Officials also note that domestic tourist numbers are increasing alongside international arrivals, signaling optimism for upcoming seasons.
