Sikkim recently reached a new milestone in adventure sports with the successful launch of the first-ever Rhenock Sikkim Paragliding Accuracy Championship 2026. Inaugurated by Chief Minister P.S. Tamang (Golay) at Thumki Dara and Amba Dara in Pakyong district, the event was organized by the Rhenock Tourism Development Society (RTDS) in collaboration with the state’s tourism and civil aviation department. The Chief Minister emphasized that the championship is a key part of a broader strategy to develop rural infrastructure and promote the state’s scenic regions as world-class travel destinations. Winners were honored in both solo and team categories, marking a successful debut for this high-flying competition.
Beyond the thrills of the sport, the event serves as a strategic move to boost community-based tourism and local livelihoods. During the festivities, Chief Minister Tamang encouraged residents to embrace eco-friendly initiatives, such as homestays, to preserve the region’s cultural and natural heritage. By identifying Rhenock as an emerging hub for paragliding, the government aims to blend athletic discipline with economic growth, creating sustainable business opportunities for the local population. This initiative underscores Sikkim’s commitment to strengthening its sports infrastructure while positioning the Himalayan state as a premier destination for global adventure seekers.
