Nagaon Bypoll: BJP’s Debashish Sharma Files FIR Against AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal

With just three days remaining before polling for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, BJP candidate Debashish Sharma has filed an FIR against AIUDF chief and bypoll candidate Badruddin Ajmal at Nagaon Sadar Police Station, accusing him of making false, defamatory and damaging remarks during the election campaign.

According to Sharma, Ajmal, while addressing an election rally, alleged that he was responsible for the death of Mumtaz Begum and referred to him as a “murderer”.

Speaking to reporters after filing the FIR on Saturday, Sharma strongly rejected the allegations and claimed they were aimed at tarnishing his reputation among voters.

“Badruddin Ajmal called me a murderer. He talks about pushback, but there was a court order, and government officials are bound to follow legal directives. Suddenly, this issue has been raised during elections. Why now?” Sharma said.

He also criticised Ajmal’s campaign promises relating to education and healthcare, questioning how such initiatives would be financed.

“Ajmal talks about improving schools and healthcare facilities, but where will the money come from? He says these things only to secure votes. We will pursue legal action and take the matter to the Supreme Court if necessary,” Sharma said.

The BJP candidate further questioned Ajmal’s political record and connection with voters, claiming that people were seeking change.

“During the Dhubri election, he lost one lakh votes. People are demanding answers. A politician should maintain a connection with the people. What has he done for them?” Sharma asked.

Invoking Assam’s cultural identity, Sharma accused Ajmal of failing to understand the state’s traditions and heritage.

The Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is being contested by BJP’s Debashish Sharma, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora and others. Voting will be held on October 6, while counting will take place on October 9.

Meanwhile, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal sparked controversy after making a series of remarks targeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, minister Piyush Hazarika and BJP candidate Debashish Sharma during a campaign meeting at Borbori in Lahorighat.

Addressing supporters, Ajmal reportedly said, “Will gouge out Himanta’s eyes so that he cannot see Miya people,” and claimed that both Himanta Biswa Sarma and Piyush Hazarika would eventually have to “go to Bangladesh”.

Targeting Debashish Sharma, Ajmal stated that he would be sent to jail within four months and added that he would be forgiven if he recited the Kalima.

Ajmal also declared, “This doctor, that doctor, Ajmal is the factor,” while addressing the gathering.

During the meeting, Ajmal claimed he had spent Rs 50 lakh on the education and political rise of Iliyas Ansari and announced that Ansari would receive an AIUDF ticket in an upcoming election.

The comments have added to the political tensions surrounding the Nagaon bypoll campaign.

Election campaigning in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency also witnessed unrest after protests erupted during a Congress campaign rally at Hatipara in Rupahihat.

Tension prevailed when a group of protesters confronted the rally and raised slogans such as “Congress Go Back,” “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back,” “Rakibul Hussain Go Back,” “Wajed Ali Choudhury Go Back,” “Ripun Bora Go Back,” “Nurul Huda Go Back,” and “Shivamoni Bora Go Back.”

The protesters also displayed black flags in front of Congress leaders as the campaign procession moved through the area.

The incident reflects the increasingly heated political atmosphere in Nagaon as parties intensify their campaign efforts ahead of polling on October 6.
