Government Unveils Roadmap for Treated Water Reuse and Groundwater Conservation

Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil on Monday released three important water management documents aimed at promoting sustainable water use, groundwater conservation, and transparency in water-related projects. The documents were unveiled during the All India Water Secretaries’ Conference organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Among the key releases was the city-level action plan for the reuse of treated water in Varanasi, which provides a roadmap for safe wastewater reuse and supports the development of a circular water economy. The other documents include an operation and maintenance manual for artificial recharge and groundwater conservation structures, jointly prepared by the National Water Mission and the Central Ground Water Board, along with a schedule of rates for drilling and allied works to ensure greater transparency and standardisation.

Addressing the conference, Patil said water is the foundation of India’s economic growth, food security, environmental sustainability, and public well-being. He stressed the need for scientific, efficient, and sustainable management of water resources amid challenges such as climate change, groundwater depletion, and rapid urbanisation.

The minister urged states and Union Territories to strengthen the Catch the Rain 2026 campaign through rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, rejuvenation of traditional water bodies, afforestation, and public participation.

The conference also discussed key issues, including irrigation reforms, dam safety, water governance, and digital planning. The event concluded with a commitment to achieve the vision of “Jal Surakshit, Bharat Surakshit” through coordinated and time-bound implementation of water management initiatives.
