Assam Prepares to Welcome Powerful Global Leader as PM Modi Details Three-Day July Visit

Assam is making extensive arrangements to host a significant international gathering in early July, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealing that an “influential global leader” is expected to accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a three-day tour of the state. Speaking during a Facebook Live broadcast on Saturday night—his first address since the April 9 legislative elections—Sarma confirmed that the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Assam from July 1 to July 3. While the Central Government has not yet released an official itinerary confirming the identities of accompanying dignitaries, local authorities have already initiated major beautification and infrastructural upgrades across Guwahati to welcome the unnamed international guest. Speculation indicates that the high-profile visitor is likely Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, signaling a potential Japan-India bilateral summit to review collaborative development projects managed under the India-Japan Act East Forum in the strategic northeastern region. A similar summit between Narendra Modi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was scheduled to take place in Guwahati in December 2019 but was ultimately canceled due to widespread regional protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Beyond the logistical updates for the upcoming diplomatic visit, Chief Minister Sarma detailed several massive, long-term connectivity and economic infrastructure projects designed to link the state to broader national and international trade routes. The Center is actively moving forward with a major four-phase plan to construct a sprawling, 750-km express corridor extending directly from Silchar in southern Assam to Siliguri in West Bengal, following the initial phase launched by the Prime Minister in March between Silchar and Barapani. Additionally, the state administration is exploring a blueprint to transform Rupsi Airport—located near Dhubri in western Assam—into a major regional logistics and commercial hub. Sarma highlighted that the airport’s strategic geographic proximity makes it perfectly suited to handle transit networks feeding into Bangladesh, Bhutan, northern West Bengal, and the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), positioning Assam as an essential economic gateway to Southeast Asia.
