A relief and rescue team from the 72nd Battalion, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) at Yuksum (Sikkim) launched an operation in the landslide-affected Rimbi area on Saturday.
Accompanied by a dedicated medical team from the 72nd BN, the rescue team set up an on-site medical relief camp, providing immediate treatment and medical care to 87 affected local villagers.
In coordination with the district administration and local volunteers, SSB personnel safely evacuated people from approximately 32 houses located near the vulnerable landslide hazard zone as a precautionary measure, ensuring the safety of lives and property.
The SSB team assessed the extent of the damage across the affected zone and initiated emergency rescue operations in close coordination with the local civil administration and residents.
Several key dignitaries and senior officials visited the landslide-affected site to review the situation, including T. T. Bhutia, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Government of Sikkim, District Collector Gyalshing, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Gyalshing, Panchayat president, Timbrung GPU.
The swift mobilisation, seamless coordination, and humanitarian response demonstrated by the personnel of the 72nd Battalion SSB, Yuksum were widely lauded by the local community, who expressed deep gratitude for the prompt assistance rendered during the crisis.
