Two Patharkandi Police Personnel Arrested in Alleged Rs 14 Lakh Extortion Case

Two police personnel posted at Patharkandi Police Station in Assam’s Sribhumi district have been arrested in connection with an alleged extortion case involving Rs 14 lakh, police sources said.

According to the allegations, a businessman’s associate was picked up from Patharkandi Railway Station in a police vehicle on September 10 and taken to the Chandkhira area, where he was allegedly forced to hand over Rs 14 lakh.

During the course of the investigation, the names of two police personnel attached to Patharkandi Police Station reportedly surfaced. Acting on the findings, police arrested Lance Naik Anwar Hussain and Constable Sajal Shuklabaidya.

Sources said search operations were subsequently conducted at the residences of the two accused personnel, leading to the recovery of Rs 2 lakh in cash.

Meanwhile, the principal accused in the case, Sub-Inspector M. Nangthaiba Singh, remains absconding. Police have launched a search operation to trace and apprehend him.

The case has triggered concern in Sribhumi district, with questions being raised over the alleged involvement of serving police personnel in the incident.

Police officials said the investigation is continuing and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the probe.
