Naga Unity, Heritage and Peace Must Move Together: Rio

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has called for greater unity and understanding among Nagas, stressing that collective efforts are essential to preserve Naga identity, customary institutions and cultural heritage while advancing peace, development and modernisation. Speaking at the general conference of the Angami Public Organisation in Kohima, Rio highlighted the resilience of the Naga people and the importance of protecting indigenous traditions, customary laws and safeguards such as the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and Article 371A. Referring to the ongoing ceasefire negotiations between the Government of India and Naga political groups, he said continued dialogue, unity and the involvement of all stakeholders were necessary for an early and lasting political solution. Rio also urged Naga groups to avoid factionalism and breakaway formations, recalling a 2024 consultative meeting that called for strengthening unity and supporting the peace process. He reiterated the state government’s demand for a high-level political or ministerial interlocutor to help elevate the Naga peace talks. The chief minister cautioned that rapid modernisation without adequate regard for traditional values could weaken Naga identity and urged greater responsibility in protecting indigenous interests. He also encouraged Naga youth to acquire skills, pursue entrepreneurship and create employment, noting that government jobs alone could not meet the aspirations of the growing younger generation. Rio further highlighted issues related to the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), ILP and the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority, stressing effective implementation of existing safeguards. He said unity, cultural preservation and constructive participation in the peace process were essential to securing a stronger future for the Naga people.
