‘Swachh Hunters’ to Lead Anti-Littering and Waste Awareness Campaign

The Chümoukedima Town Council (CTC) has launched the ‘Swachh Hunters’ initiative to make Chümoukedima town litter-free, plastic-free and garbage-free, in line with the Solid Waste Management and Plastic Waste Management rules. The initiative, introduced on August 24, designates the Self Employed Women Association (SEWA), Chümoukedima, and the Chümoukedima Town Youth Organization as “Swachh Hunters”. The groups will conduct regular patrols across busy areas, including NH-29 and major roads under CTC jurisdiction, to collect litter and identify issues such as overflowing bins, blocked drains, illegal dumping and garbage accumulation. Repeated violations and problem areas will be reported to the CTC for necessary action. Beyond surveillance and waste collection, the initiative aims to encourage behavioural change and greater public participation in cleanliness efforts. The Swachh Hunters will promote the message of “mindfulness in each citizen” and encourage residents and visitors to take responsibility for the waste they generate and dispose of it properly. Street shows and other public activities will also be organised to make cleanliness awareness engaging and community-oriented. Guided by the principle “Hate the crime, not the person,” the campaign seeks to address littering while encouraging responsible behaviour. The CTC has emphasised that transforming Chümoukedima into a clean and litter-free town will require the active cooperation of citizens and visitors, with the initiative expected to strengthen community participation and promote responsible waste management.
