Assam’s table tennis stock continues to soar as young star Priyanuj Bhattacharya clinched the Under-19 boys’ singles title at the 85th Inter-State Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championships that wrapped up in Dehradun today.
In Friday’s final, Priyanuj overcame Tamil Nadu’s P.B. Abhinand 4-2 in a hard-fought contest to secure the gold medal. With this win, the Assam paddler successfully defended his national crown. Last year in Rajkot, Priyanuj had beaten Maharashtra’s Hemant 4-1 to win the same title.
Priyanuj’s individual brilliance was complemented by a team effort, as the Assam Under-19 boys’ squad also bagged a bronze medal at the championships, underlining the state’s growing depth in the sport.
The victory further cements Assam’s rising reputation in Indian table tennis, with Priyanuj emerging as one of the country’s most promising junior players.
