To mark International Women’s Day, the Assam government on March 8, 2026, carried out a massive financial disbursement under its flagship Orunodoi 3.0 scheme. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the distribution of ₹3,600 crore to approximately 40 lakh beneficiary families across the state. Under the revised 3.0 version of the scheme, the monthly financial assistance has been increased to ₹1,500 per family, specifically credited to the bank accounts of female heads of households.
The Orunodoi scheme, which is the largest cash transfer program in Assam’s history, aims to provide nutritional and medical support to economically vulnerable families. By aligning this disbursement with International Women’s Day, the state government emphasized its commitment to “Nari Shakti” (women’s power) and financial independence for women. In addition to the existing beneficiaries, the government highlighted that the scheme has now been integrated with the National Food Security Act (NFSA) to ensure better targeting of the poorest households. During the celebrations, the Chief Minister noted that the initiative has played a significant role in reducing the state’s poverty levels and empowering women to take charge of their family’s essential expenses.
