NCDC Launches Mobile Platform for Easy Reporting of Disease Outbreaks

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has rolled out a new Community Reporting System under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) aiming to leverage ordinary citizens as early sentinels for public health outbreaks. This straightforward system uses a QR code, accessible via the Health Ministry or NCDC websites and public materials, which users can scan to report clusters of illness like fever or diarrhea, or other unusual health events such as suspected food poisoning or dog bites. Crucially, the system allows for the upload of supporting photos or videos. The moment a report is submitted, an instant alert is sent to district, state, and national surveillance dashboards enabling health authorities to verify the information and initiate early investigations. NCDC officials, including Dr. Ranjan Das, believe this tool fills a critical gap by catching outbreaks silently beginning in homes and neighborhoods, potentially hours before patients reach hospitals. Despite its launch in January 2024, the system has seen poor utilization, logging only about 100 valid reports so far, highlighting the need for better public engagement. Nevertheless officials stress that for the system to be a “game changer ” especially during seasons for waterborne and influenza-like diseases, it requires the responsible and consistent vigilance of citizens, who are assured that their data is safeguarded by national cyber-security protocols.
