On Saturday, authorities in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district rescued four endangered Golden Langurs, a rare species indigenous to Assam. A total of six people have been arrested in connection with the trafficking activity. The accused have been identified as:
- Mithu Das (33)
- Titu Das (29)
- Samil Hossain Biswas (39)
- Rafikul Mondal (29)
- Hasibul Mondal (25)
- Biswajit Bag (23)
Authorities verified that the rescued monkeys are Golden Langurs, an endangered species under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act. This species, which lives largely in western Assam, is highly endangered owing to habitat degradation and unlawful trafficking. Police have initiated a larger inquiry to determine the entire scope of the trafficking network and track down the initial location from where the langurs were taken. Wildlife officials have also been tasked with assessing the rescued animals’ health and ensuring their safe rehabilitation.
