Rahul Gandhi Blocked My Path to CM Post Himanta Biswa Sarma Reveals 2014 Congress Drama

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently made a startling revelation regarding the 2014 political crisis within the Assam Congress, claiming that Sonia Gandhi had initially approved his appointment as Chief Minister. According to Sarma, he had secured the support of 58 out of 70-plus Congress MLAs to replace then-CM Tarun Gogoi, and Sonia Gandhi had even asked him to finalize a date for his oath-taking ceremony. However, he alleges that the situation changed abruptly following an intervention by Rahul Gandhi, who was in the United States at the time. This internal power struggle ultimately led to Sarma resigning from the cabinet and leaving the Congress party the following year.

Reflecting on the episode a decade later, Sarma expressed gratitude for the turn of events, stating that the intervention inadvertently allowed him to join the BJP and serve “Sanatan Dharma” more effectively. He noted that while he felt “hurt” at the time, he now believes the outcome was for the best, as it prevented him from becoming “tainted” by staying within the Congress ecosystem. These remarks coincided with a fresh blow to the Assam Congress, as Sarma also announced that former state party president Bhupen Borah is set to join the BJP, further signaling the ongoing disintegration of the opposition’s ranks in the state.
