Tragedy in Bengaluru: Four Assam Workers Die of Suspected Asphyxiation

Four young men from Assam, employed as security guards at a soft drinks warehouse, were found dead on Friday evening in their rented room on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The deceased, identified as Dactor Taid (18), Dhananjay Taid (23), Narendranath Taid (30), and Jayant Chinte (23), were discovered after colleagues grew concerned when they failed to report for their shift. Upon breaking open a window, fellow workers found the men unresponsive in their small, sealed room. Police preliminary investigations suggest they died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by toxic fumes from a portable stove used for cooking rice, which had filled the unventilated space overnight.

The incident has sparked an outcry from the victims’ families, who suspect foul play and have called for a comprehensive investigation. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intervened, reaching out to the Karnataka government to ensure a thorough probe and to facilitate the immediate repatriation of the bodies. This tragic event highlights the precarious living conditions often faced by migrant workers; data reveals that hundreds of thousands of youths from Assam migrate to southern states like Karnataka for employment, contributing significantly to their home state’s economy while frequently residing in cramped and unsafe environments.
