Tripura’s First Tea Auction Hub to Boost Quality, Transparency, and Producer Returns

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the state’s first Tea Auction Centre at the PN Complex in Gorkhabasti, Agartala, marking a major milestone in strengthening the local economy and reviving struggling tea gardens. Describing the day as a historic event for Tripura, Saha emphasized that the new facility would significantly improve returns for tea growers, safeguard worker livelihoods, reduce heavy transportation costs, and generate fresh employment opportunities across the state. As India’s third-largest tea producer overall and second-largest in the Northeast, Tripura produces 70 to 100 lakh kilograms of tea annually across 54 gardens and supports approximately 2,000 to 2,800 small growers. Previously, local producers relied heavily on distant auction hubs in Kolkata and Guwahati to sell their yield, incurring exorbitant freight expenses, suffering logistical delays, and enduring protracted payment cycles that often stretched up to 44 days. The newly established Agartala facility introduces local electronic auctions, cutting out excessive intermediaries, fostering healthy market competition among buyers, and shortening the overall selling timeframe by nearly 40 per cent. Supported by integrated testing facilities and warehousing infrastructure, the auction hub is projected to yield savings of ₹3 to ₹6 per kilogram of tea by eliminating long-distance transport and storage overheads. The initiative builds upon ongoing state government programs active since 2018 aimed at upgrading tea estate infrastructure, expanding educational and welfare support for workers’ families, and providing financial security to the industry’s workforce. By ensuring direct market access, enhanced pricing transparency, and faster liquidity, the state government aims to encourage local producers to invest in modern production techniques, quality enhancement, and brand building, ultimately guiding vulnerable gardens onto a sustainable, profitable growth trajectory.
