A prominent collective of civil society members and activists under the banner of the ‘Pragatishil Nagarik Samaj’ (PRNT) has issued a stinging critique of the Assam government, accusing it of engaging in “undemocratic and partisan” activities during the ongoing election cycle. In a press conference held in Guwahati, the group alleged that the state machinery is being used to intimidate opposition voices and suppress dissent, specifically citing the timing of certain administrative orders and police actions that have coincided with the peak of the campaign season.
The group highlighted concerns over the selective enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct and the alleged harassment of grassroots organizers who have been critical of the state’s socio-economic policies. By raising these issues, the PRNT aims to draw the attention of the Election Commission of India to ensure a “level playing field” for all political participants. The citizens’ group warned that such actions risk undermining the democratic fabric of the state and called for greater transparency in the functioning of the state bureaucracy until the electoral process is concluded.
