Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified his political offensive against Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, asserting that his allegations labeling Gogoi a “Pakistani agent” are rooted in factual evidence. Speaking at the Panchayat Aaj Tak summit in Guwahati, Sarma questioned the legitimacy of Gogoi’s 2013 visit to Pakistan, specifically highlighting alleged visa discrepancies regarding a trip to Rawalpindi. The Chief Minister challenged the Congress leadership’s silence, suggesting that their failure to file a defamation suit against him serves as a tacit admission that his claims regarding unauthorized travel near the Pakistan Army headquarters are accurate.
As the state prepares for upcoming assembly elections, Sarma characterized the dispute as a matter of national security rather than mere political rhetoric. While expressing confidence in a BJP victory, he maintained a cautious stance, noting that final decisions rest with the voters. Sarma also indicated a shift in his campaign strategy, stating he intends to avoid “emotional” or communal rhetoric in favor of a fact-based narrative. Meanwhile, Gogoi has dismissed the accusations as a “super flop political drama,” following a court directive that previously cautioned Congress leaders against making certain retaliatory statements during this high-stakes legal and political battle.
